Unsane Rhapsody

The Arts and Social Justice Departments at Dartington, alongside Soundart Radio 102.5fm, present a season of work based around  perceptions and depictions of mental health. Films, talks and broadcasts, will take place over the week, including Unsane Rhapsody, a collection of new work for radio.

Unsane Rhapsody will premiere on Sunday 10th October as part of Soundart Radio’s 24 hour Radio Festival for World Mental Health Day 10.10.10. This collection of new work was created and recorded during workshops held at Dartington Village Hall, devised and led by sound artist Magda Crace. People who have experienced mental health difficulties, either themselves or as a friend, family
member or carer, were invited to take part in an enthusiastic vocal and instrumental composition of indefinite form - a stream of consciousness, sounds of changing mood, colour, and tonality - an unsane rhapsody. Other special radio pieces to be broadcast during the day will include work from Cooltan Arts, a London-based mental health charity, and work from the Maudsley Hospital radio project Life and Living.

The Roundhouse Cafe will also be showing an exhibition of work by artists Luce Raesmith entitled “Off the Trolley Artworks” and Lisa Evans entitled “Words of Selves: the Other Side of Silence”, until the end of October.

Films
include Seraphine, Shed Your Tears and Walk Away, The Soloist, Tarnation, Shutter Island and LT22 Radio La Colifata which will be followed by and an overarching panel discussion by Director of Social Justice at Dartington, Celia Atherton, and Tim Yealland from English Touring Opera, about their work with the socially excluded and incarcerated.
